- Why did you want to become a fractional CFO?
I have been fortunate to have had a long, successful and varied career. Being a fractional CFO gives me the opportunity to share that experience and help a variety of businesses.
- Why industries are you focused on?
Over the past 35 years I have worked in several different industries. A few of the industries include insurance, publishing, manufacturing, advertising, business services and geographic information systems. Because of my varied industry experience, I am open to any industry and in fact, enjoy learning new industries. Most recently I have worked with heavy duty truck and trailer dealerships, and I have highly enjoyed it.
- What are common challenges that you see in businesses?
1) Businesses often struggle with using accurate, timely information to base their decision making. This often results in inordinate time compiling information vs analyzing that information for decisions.
2) Success frequently breeds comfort and complacency rather than the embracement of change necessary to remain successful.
- What is your favorite vacation and why?
We traveled to Kauai, Hawaii with our children and grandchildren and it was amazing. Sharing that stunning natural beauty will all my family made this the best vacation ever.
- Do you recommend any business books?
1) Blink by Malcolm Gladwell –An excellent book about learning to develop and trust your gut to make faster decisions rather than staying mired in the details with analysis paralysis.
2) Shoe Dog by Phil Knight – Nike founder Phil Knight shares his story of overcoming the extreme odds (of success) of a startup, along with the incredible brand development and team building.
3) Navigating the Impossible by Jason Caldwell – An important book about building extraordinary teams.
- What is your favorite local coffee shop?
My favorite place to grab coffee is Blackdog, a local coffee shop located in Lenexa, KS. It is also coincidentally where I first met Mike, our founder.
