CFO Highlight – Brian Robinson

Brian joined Crown CFO in early 2022. He’s spent 25+ years in manufacturing and distribution—the kind of industries where small decisions about pricing, operations, and tax strategy can swing profitability by hundreds of thousands of dollars. We sat down to ask him what he’s learned, and why he’s passionate about helping business owners see what they’re missing.

Why fractional CFO work?

I love walking into a different business each week and asking: What’s holding you back? What are you not seeing? Every company has its own puzzle, and helping the owner solve it is exactly why I got into this.

What makes manufacturing and distribution different?

In beer distribution, I saw firsthand how small operational wins add up. One tweak to pricing? $1M in extra gross profit per year. Smarter compensation structures? $1.5M in savings. Better warehouse organization—turning 2,000 SKUs into a system that actually works—that’s where you find efficiency.

The same playbook works across manufacturing and distribution. These industries run on detail, systems, and discipline. That’s where a CFO adds real value.

Favorite business trip?

Brian got the chance to travel to Dublin for Guinness’s 250th anniversary. In three days, his group toured the brewery, played golf on a Ryder Cup course, ate dinner with the Chief of Dublin, caught a Notre Dame vs. Navy football game, and ended with a private U2 concert. That’s a memory he’ll never forget. When he’s not crunching numbers, Brian loves a good business book, Scottish castles, and Wimbledon.

Favorite vacation?

Our family went on a trip to Scotland and then London. Scotland trip included castles, Isle of Sky and unbelievable scenery. Edinburgh is a must see city. London was excellent with trips to museums, pubs, and tower bridge. We finished with a trip to Wimbledon for two days of tennis. What an awesome tennis venue!

What problems do you see over and over?

Four things show up in almost every company:

Tax strategy gets ignored. Most owners treat taxes as a bill that shows up at the end of the year. It doesn’t have to be that way.

You’re looking backward instead of forward. Historical numbers tell you what happened; you need a financial plan that helps you make better decisions next quarter and next year.

Your professional team is out of sync. You’ve got a CPA, an attorney, an insurance person, maybe a banker—but they’re not talking to each other. Misaligned partners cost you money.

You’re not negotiating. Suppliers, customers, insurance carriers—everyone expects you to push back. Most owners don’t.

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?

Make decisions on data, not gut feel. Attention to detail wins. And challenge everyone—your team, your partners, your assumptions. That’s where the money is.
